How We Treat Our High Quality, Active Organic Ingredients

It’s one thing to use the best quality of organic ingredients that nature has to offer to make soap and skin products but that is only part of the story. How we treat these amazing ingredients and what we do with them determines the intrinsic quality, value and health benefits of the end product.

At The Savvy Soaperie, we create natural, handmade soaps using the Cold Process method, which protects the valuable health properties and benefits of the oils in the soap.

  • We create our soaps without boiling the ingredients.
  • We do not remove the glycerin from our soaps.
  • All the naturally occurring glycerin which is produced during the saponification process, remains in the soap and all the natural nutrients, minerals, vitamins and omegas of the oils are preserved to nurture and feed the skin.

Everything is freshly made by hand in small batches in Canada’s beautiful Ottawa Valley.

We do this for you and for ourselves because:

  • We believe that taking care of your skin should be a “NATURAL” pleasure.
  • Soap should “RESPECT” the natural flora of the skin.
  • Your skin is your largest organ and you can absorb as much through your skin as you can through consuming food. We NEED to treat our skin better.
  • Your skin is your third lung so it breathes and soaks up any harmful chemicals you put on it.
  • We like to keep things organic and natural “ALWAYS”.
  • We are convinced that together, we can make a difference in reducing chemicals going into our streams, rivers, lakes and oceans – one soap bar at a time!
  • Commercial soaps contain sulfates and other chemicals like formaldehyde.

Commercial Soap Ingredients

Many of us remember a time when things were more simple but somewhere along the way the excitement of the 1960’s chemical boom infiltrated our lives. With synthetic chemicals, companies made our skin softer, our hair shinier and our wrinkles vanish. Through it all, we were led to believe that labs could do a better job of looking after us than Mother Nature. Today, we live with over 75,000 chemicals in our industry and only a handful of them have been tested for long-term effects on human health.

Take a few moments to study the list of ingredients in most commercial soaps. They contain a wide range of harmful ingredients that should be left in the science lab. These commercial soaps are not good for the skin, let alone the Earth. Commercial soap usually contains variations of many of the following:

  • sodium cocoyl isethionate (synthetic detergent)
  • paraben preservatives
  • formaldehyde-releasing preservatives
  • urea preservatives
  • hydroquinone
  • lead acetate
  • synthetic dyes
  • silicones
  • propylene glycol
  • polyethylene glycol
  • nano particles
  • triclosan
  • phthalates
  • sodium stearate (emulsifier, also used as a cheap stabilizer in plastics)
  • sodium dodecylbenzonesulfonate (synthetic detergent)
  • stearic acid (hardener)
  • sodium tallowate (sodium salt of cow fat)
  • water sodium isethionate (detergent/emulsifying agent)
  • fragrance (synthetic scent)
  • trisodium EDTA (stabilizer, used in industrial cleaning products)
  • trisodium etidronate (preservative, a chemical that is used in soaps to prevent soap scum)
  • sodium lauryl sulphate
  • ammonium lauryl sulphate
  • BHT (preservative)

And don’t be fooled. Even so called natural soap you buy in a store can have any number of these ingredients. Lots of them use synthetic fragrances that contain chemicals.

LOCALLY-SOURCED INGREDIENTS

SUPPORTING SMALL LOCAL BUSINESS

At The Savvy Soaperie we support our small local businesses because:

  • We understand how our local businesses are the engine that drives our communities. By supporting them we contribute to the enrichment of our community.
  • When we buy local we also reduce our carbon footprint on this earth because products made closer to home require much less transportation.
  • Buying local supports and creates local jobs.

We know that we can make an impact on our environment by buying raw materials from local businesses. We patronize small farms, farmer’s markets, buy local organic ingredients from our grocery stores and have also found some wonderful locally owned and operated businesses from which to buy ingredients.  Below is a description of some of these businesses.
